This illustrious tournament is held every four years. It always takes place one year after the FIFA Men's World Cup, with the USA as the current defending champions.

The ninth edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup will kick off on July 20, with the opening matches involving co-host nations New Zealand and Australia. New Zealand will kick off proceedings head-to-head against 1995 World Cup winners Norway at Eden Park, Auckland. The action will continue on the same day with Australia facing off against Women's World Cup newbies, the Republic of Ireland, at the Sydney Stadium.

How many teams compete in the FIFA Women's World Cup?

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup has expanded from 24 teams competing to 32 this year, replicating the same format from the Men's World Cup and promoting more inclusivity with the teams.

The Women's World Cup commences with the group stages on July 20. Eight groups of four teams (A-H) will play against each other in round-robin format group matches.

The top two teams from every group (16 total) advance to the knockout stages.

The winners progress to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final tournament on August 20. Across all tournaments and the FIFA Women's World Cup, 64 games will be played in total.
